How Many Days Should You Spend in Cape Town?
Planning your Cape Town trip? Here's our recommended 5-day itinerary for first-time visitors.
One of the most common questions we receive at PrimePlaces is how many days visitors should spend in Cape Town. The honest answer is that you could spend a month and still not see everything, but for most first-time visitors, we recommend a minimum of five days to experience the highlights of the city and its surroundings.
Why Five Days?
Cape Town is a city of extraordinary diversity, from mountain hikes and beach days to wine tasting and cultural experiences. Five days gives you enough time to see the major attractions without feeling rushed, while still allowing for spontaneous exploration and relaxation. Here is our recommended day-by-day overview for a first-time visitor.
Day-by-Day Overview
Day 1: Arrival and Orientation
Settle into your PrimePlaces accommodation, explore your neighbourhood, and enjoy a welcome dinner at a nearby restaurant. If you arrive in the morning, consider a gentle walk along the Sea Point Promenade or through Green Point Park to stretch your legs after the journey.
Day 2: Table Mountain and City Exploration
Take the cable car up Table Mountain in the morning when skies are clearest. Spend the afternoon exploring the Bo-Kaap, the Company's Garden, and the city centre. End the day with dinner on Bree Street or at the V&A Waterfront.
Day 3: Cape Peninsula Day Trip
Drive the spectacular Cape Peninsula route, visiting Chapman's Peak, Cape Point, Boulders Beach for the penguins, and Simon's Town. Return via the scenic coastal road and enjoy a sunset at Camps Bay.
Day 4: Kirstenbosch and Constantia Wine Route
Visit Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden in the morning, then spend the afternoon tasting wines at the historic Constantia Valley estates — Groot Constantia, Klein Constantia, and Beau Constantia. Enjoy a long lunch at one of the estate restaurants.
Day 5: V&A Waterfront, Robben Island, or Leisure Day
Take the ferry to Robben Island for a morning tour, or spend the day exploring the V&A Waterfront, shopping, and visiting the Zeitz MOCAA. In the afternoon, stroll through the De Waterkant neighbourhood and enjoy a farewell dinner.
Extending Your Trip
If you have more time, Cape Town's surroundings offer incredible experiences that are well worth extending your trip for. Consider adding two to three days for a Garden Route road trip, exploring the coastal towns of Knysna, Plettenberg Bay, and Tsitsikamma. Alternatively, spend two days in the Cape Winelands, visiting Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, and Paarl for world-class wine tasting and dining. For nature lovers, a whale-watching excursion to Hermanus (best between June and November) is an unforgettable experience.
Our Recommendation
Five days is ideal for a focused first visit, but seven to ten days allows you to explore at a more leisurely pace and venture beyond the city. Whatever the length of your stay, PrimePlaces has the perfect apartment to make Cape Town feel like home.
